Interior Designer | April Mother to Mother
Welcome everyone to Mother to Mother, where every month we talk to another mother who is a professional in one field related to motherhood. In April Mother to Mother we get to talk to the amazing Dara Beitler, Principal of Dara Beitler Interiors, LLC, who is an interior designer working with moms all over the Greater Washington Area.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am an intuitive designer focusing on my client’s individual styles and wishes. Functionality and spatial awareness are the footprints of my designs. Combining a unique mix of genres in each project keeps it interesting and versatile. My personal style stems from my lifelong love of vintage and antique pieces, while also mixing modern and contemporary vibes and natural elements. I am a mother of two amazing children, a 9 year old boy and a 6 year old girl. Traveling with my husband and spending time with friends and family are some of my favorite pastimes.
What made you decide to become an interior designer in the first place?
My path to interior design was through passion. Initially, I practiced as a speech-language pathologist specializing in acute medical adult swallowing and communication disorders. Architecture and design were always passions of mine that I learned through hands on experience and ongoing research. My clients and surroundings inspire me to create bespoke spaces. Creating spaces that captivate their personalities and ways of living are the reasons I now do what I do.
Tell us about your work with new and/or expecting moms when designing spaces for their little babies.
Nurseries, kids’ bathrooms and play spaces are always fun projects! I like to base my designs on function first, followed by aesthetics. Scale is always super important when designing your little one’s space. We want all of the necessary furnishings to fit well (and look great, too)! There are lots of pieces that go into their nurseries that must be safe and comfortable for both you and baby. It is also key to think about growth overtime and how your nursery can evolve into a toddler, child, and teen bedroom.
What’s your favorite part of what you do?
Creating a special space for you and your growing family is most important to me. Natural elements, mixing materials and selecting colors that evoke emotions are a few of my favorite aspects of design.
What’s the craziest part about your job?
Juggling several projects at the same time. Sometimes, I wish there were 8 of me. There are so many fine details of each design that I keep organized to ultimately create the perfect space for you.
If you could impart one piece of wisdom to new or expectant moms, what would it be?
Flexibility- everything is a phase. As someone who once loved and thrived on structure, I learned that opening my mind to being flexible was key to getting through very sleepy days and nights.
Thank you Dara, I loved this! Flexibility is so important when you become a parent. There is so much out of our control and if we can’t be willing to bend, life can get hard really fast! I also really loved the point about planning your spaces to be functional and not just pretty. Sometimes we only think about how something looks and not how it will be on the day to day and that can really come back to bite us!
