When most people think of those sweet snuggly baby photo shoots, they might not first think: colorful newborn sessions! But I wanted to explore that topic today and show you how sometimes adding the pops of color can really bring a cool element into your photos!
While it’s true that soft neutrals usually come to mind for these shoots — creamy whites, cozy grays, maybe a hint of blush… I’m here to tell you: bringing color into your session can be just as beautiful. While there’s nothing wrong with a classic neutral palette (I love a timeless look!), I want you to know all your options as an expecting parent!
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the palette for your session. No one says girls have to be in pink and boys have to be in blue. Or that we MUST use neutrals for every photo!! We have a whole palette of options, and YOU get to have a say.
The key is simplicity. When designing colorful newborn sessions, I am always trying to keep it simple.
We don’t want to overwhelm your baby or the frame with a dozen competing shades. Instead, I always guide parents toward choosing a single color or two that can shine within the session. Whether it’s a deep jewel tone, a soft pastel, or a cozy earthy hue — when done with intention, it adds warmth and personality to your photos without ever feeling “too much.”
One thing I always tell my families (whether it’s a newborn session or a family portrait) is that I’m all about creating images that stand the test of time. I want these to be the photos you look back on in 20 years, and they still feel relevant. PS: I’m getting emotional thinking about you pulling out these images when designing a high school graduation slideshow!!
